Truman Medical Center - Lakewood Campus Chiller & Boiler Plant Replacement

Truman Medical Center selected the design-build team of MMC Contractors and Burns & McDonnell for the Chiller & Boiler Plant Replacement project for the Lakewood Campus in the fall of 2012. After a complete review of the current utility usage, and assessment of the hospitals current and future needs, Burns & McDonnell provided technical assistance during the design phase of the project, while MMC Contractors fabricated two chiller pump skids in the Kansas City fabrication shop, along with making numerous other piping retrofits in the existing plant. The Lakewood Campus of Truman Medical Center Hospital serves communities east of Kansas City, MO including Lee's Summit and Independence, MO - both large suburban communities.

Because the hospital needed to make immediate repairs and expand capacity at this historic site, MMC Contractors and Burns & McDonnell suggested existing equipment be replaced with new more efficient equipment that could be mounted on skids. Thus enabling the hospital to relocate the new systems for future planned growth.  Most of the 24 week construction schedule was spent routing temporary systems at the existing facility while the equipment skids are being constructed off-site in the Kansas City fabrication shop. A progression of the the skids fabricated in our Kansas City shop and being installed in the new utility plant is shown in the photographs above. Fully assembled, insulated and painted, these pump skids, two new chillers, and a heat exchanger were all set in place in less than a half of a day. The site of the expanded Utility Plant was to the north of the original laundry building (now the boiler building). It is tight, adjacent to an active patient parking lot, delivery dock for the hospital and has street lights and power lines to avoid.

Final installation and commissioning took place over the remaining four weeks. The entire design-build project was completed within it's original 10-month schedule.

The project won the 2013-2014 Outstanding Mechanical Installation Award (OMI) for HVAC over $3M.
